Ako digitalizácia prispieva zelenej ekonomike

Dnes sa pozrieme na otázku, ktorá zaujme najmä firmy, ktoré chcú nielen zarábať, ale majú aj etické štandardy a chcú byť ohľaduplné voči životnému prostrediu. Digitalizácia podnikania je na prvý pohľad pre životné prostredie a klímu jasným prínosom – chráni predsa naše lesy. Je to však naozaj tak? Nejde tak trochu o greenwashing? A ako to zapadá do širších súvislostí? Poďme tieto otázky spolu preskúmať.

Zaujímavosť na úvod

Vedeli ste, že zatiaľ čo v roku 1975 dosahoval hmotný majetok spoločností S&P 500 až 83 %, v roku 2020 to už bolo iba 10 %?

Ako hovorí Jára Cimrman, môžeme o tom viesť spory, môžeme s tým nesúhlasiť, ale to je tak všetko, čo s tým môžeme urobiť. Svet prechádza k nehmotnej ekonomike. To okrem iného znamená, že kto chce držať krok s dobou, musí digitalizovať.

Ako je to s tou digitalizáciou a zelenou ekonomikou?

Digitalizácia na prvý pohľad prináša zásadný environmentálny benefit. Ako princíp prispieva v dvoch oblastiach, a obe predstavujú nielen modernizáciu, ale aj ekologizáciu firmy:

Zvýšenie efektivity: dobre nastavená digitalizácia vedie k ekonomickým úsporám – digitálne dáta sú oproti hárkom papierov spravidla presnejšie, rýchlejšie dostupné, je možné spracovať ich do štatistík a agregácií a lepšie ich vyhodnocovať. Výsledkom je zvýšená efektivita.

Priama úspora materiálov a emisií – šetrenie lesov, zníženie emisií z dopravy. To keď nahradíme fyzickú prepravu dokumentov elektronickou (najlacnejšia preprava je tá, ktorú sme nemuseli vykonať).

Malo by teda ísť o “win-win” riešenie: bod 1 predstavuje finančné úspory priamo pre firmu, bod 2 je o prínose pre zelenší svet.

Je tu však drobný háčik. Ak tvrdíme, že sme „zelenší“, pretože sme zrušili tlačené faktúry, ale ignorujeme celkový kontext, v lepšom prípade sme nedôslední a v horšom sa môžeme dopustiť greenwashingu. Digitalizácia má svoju vlastnú digitálnu uhlíkovú stopu, ktorú treba započítať: dátové centrá žerú slušnú dávku energie aj vody na chladenie

Nejde pritom o drobné: kolektívna svetová digitálna uhlíková stopa bola v r. 2019 až 3,7 % vypúšťaných skleníkových plynov. Na druhej strane treba povedať, že sem patria aj aké Netflixy, ktoré sú nenažranejšie než digitalizácia procesov vo firmách – takže aj takéto číslo treba brať s rezervou.

Aby sme sa v tom zorientovali a mali istotu, že naozaj prispievame k lepšiemu svetu, musíme vychádzať z reálnych dát.

A tu prichádzajú dobré správy. Výpočty ukazujú, že digitalizácia je spravidla naozaj súčasťou tzv. zelenej ekonomiky, pretože má čistý pozitívny ekologický prínos, aj keď digitálna stopa cloudu a hardvéru nie je zanedbateľná a tvorí relevantnú položku v rovnici. Niekoľko príkladov z reálneho sveta:

Energie: kampus NTU v Singapure: čistý výsledok zavedenia digitálnej optimalizácie chladenia, osvetlenia a ventilácie na základe reálneho pohybu osôb bol ušetrenie 9 600 ton CO₂ ročne, a to aj po započítaní digitálnej stopy celého systému.

Priemysel: zavedenie digitálneho manažmentu v energeticky náročnom ťažkom priemysle tavenia a rektifikácie kremíka: napriek tomu, že digitálna stopa IT infraštruktúry potrebnej pre systém tvorila 1,5 až 2 % celkového objemu energií v továrni, čistý výsledok bol pokles emisnej stopy o 4,37 kg CO₂ na každý kg materiálu.

Logistika: rozsiahla makroštúdia, ktorá porovnávala spotrebu IT infraštruktúry voči ušetreným emisiám pri použití digitalizácie v doprave ukázala, že na každú tonu CO₂ vyprodukovanú prevádzkou digitálnych technológií, pripadá v priemere 7 až 10 ton CO₂, ktoré tieto technológie pomôžu ušetriť v reálnom svete.

Záver

Digitalizácia nie je iba buzzword, je to rozumná stratégia pre každú firmu, ktorá pracuje v reálnom svete a produkuje uhlíkovú stopu. Jej zelený prínos môže byť diskutabilný tam, kde firma uhlíkovú stopu netvorí už pred zavedením digitalizácie. Ale tam by mal nastúpiť aj prirodzený zdravý rozum: napríklad digitalizácia, ktorej výsledkom je hromada dát, ktoré nikto nepotrebuje, prirodzene zmysel nedáva. Ale tam, kde sa rieši skutočný svet, má aj benefity environmentálne.

To, že svet prechádza k nehmotnej ekonomike, je v skutočnosti výborná správa. Environmentálni filozofi sa už dlho neúspešne zaoberajú otázkou, či je nekonečný rast, ktorý je princípom našej ekonomiky, zlučiteľný s konečným svetom. Nehmotná ekonomika je odpoveďou na túto otázku. Nekonečný je asi príliš silné slovo, ale ekonomický rast je možný aj bez rastu spotreby energie, čo je ukazovateľ, nahrubo vyjadrujúci celkový dopad na naše okolie. Viaceré vyspelé krajiny ukazujú, že je možné zvyšovať blahobyt bez ničenia budúcnosti – a to je dobrá správa pre všetkých.

The right of access to personal data under Article 15 GDPR: 

The data subject shall have the right to obtain confirmation that the controller processes personal data concerning him or her. The data subject has the right to obtain access to his or her personal data (the right to be provided with a copy of the personal data held by the controller about the data subject) and information about how the controller processes it, to the extent provided for in Article 15 of the GDPR. 

The right to rectification of personal data pursuant to Article 16 GDPR: 

The data subject shall have the right to have personal data concerning him or her rectified if it is incorrect or to have it completed if it is incomplete.  

The right to erasure (right to be forgotten) under Article 17 of the GDPR: 

The data subject shall have the right to obtain from the controller the erasure of personal data concerning him or her without undue delay, under the conditions set out in Article 17 of the GDPR. This right of the data subject shall be assessed by the controller in the light of all the relevant circumstances in accordance with Article 17 GDPR. 

The right to data portability under Article 20 GDPR: 

Where the processing is based on consent or on a contract and is carried out by automated means, the data subject shall have the right to obtain his or her personal data which he or she has provided to the controller in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format and shall have the right to transmit those data to another controller. As far as technically feasible, he or she shall have the right to have the data transmitted directly from one controller to another.

The right to restrict the processing of personal data pursuant to Article 18 GDPR: 

The data subject shall have the right to have the controller restrict the processing of his or her personal data if one of the cases referred to in Article 18 of the GDPR occurs (e.g. if the data subject contests the accuracy of the personal data during the period for verifying their accuracy).
